In the last months, civilians in Ethiopia have been the main target of continuous attacks and airstrikes in Tigray and Afar

On March 25, Zlatko Gegic, CIVIC’s Director in East Africa stated that “brutal attacks against civilians in several parts of Ethiopia continue”. On this occasion, he reaffirmed the alarming situation in the country caused by the long-lasting conflict, which is at the center of several reports concerning violations of human rights. In this regard, the CIVIC’s Director also pointed out the need for the Ethiopian government to conduct an investigation for prosecute the criminals of these perpetrated abuses.

One of the most recent terrible examples of violence against civilians has been documented by a video, which shows one civilian man being burned to death by a group of armed men. According to Gegic, this act represents only one of a larger pattern of cruel acts against civilians in Ethiopia, that’s why he calls for an immediate action from the political side towards the perpetrators. Moreover, he underlines the fact that many other cases of violence and abuses on civilians have not been recorded, and consequently have not been solved.

At the international level, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) have been closely monitoring the violations of human rights in Ethiopia since the start of the conflict on 4 November 2020. The main objective of the joint action of the two organizations is to reinforce and ensure the protection of human rights and of civilians during armed conflicts; in this precise case, it is clearly needed an urgent response.
