The Security Council expressed “deep concern” about the expansion and intensification of military clashes in northern Ethiopia

In a press statement released on 5 November, the Members of the United Nations Security Council noted the impact of the conflict on the humanitarian situation, as well as the stability of the country and the wider region. They also call to put an end to hostilities, which are preventing the delivery of assistance and are causing displacement, disruption of livelihoods and food insecurity. UN reports that, beyond the initial 100.000 internally displaced people before the conflict, now 45.449 people have fled from the Tigray region into Sudan and 96.000 refugees from Eritrea are hosted in the country.

Already on 2 November, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, expressed his concern regarding the escalation of violence in Ethiopia and the declaration of a state of emergency. Indeed, the conflict, expanding in the regions of Tigray, Afar and Amhara, is deteriorating the humanitarian situation. Among his statements, the Secretary-General claimed that “the stability of Ethiopia and the wider region is at stake”.

Joining Mr. Guterres’ appeal, the Council Members asked parties to refrain from “inflammatory hate speech and incitement to violence and divisiveness” and called for a lasting ceasefire. Moreover, they reiterated their support for the role of regional organizations in the resolution of the conflict, namely the African Union (AU) and its High Representative for the Horn of African Region, Olusegun Obasanjo.
