On June 21, 2016, multiple airstrikes hit the city of Raqqa, Syria killing over 30 and injuring over 150 more. At least six children were killed. The number of casualties is uncertain due to the high number of injuries. The airstrikes targeted specific areas of the city held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), specifically an area held by foreign fighters for ISIL. It is unsure who is responsible for the airstrikes on Raqqa, whether Russian or Syrian government forces.A separate airstrike by US-led forces occurred on Wednesday. No casualties have been reported. The airstrikes hit an ISIL tactical unit, headquarters and finance center, and destroyed two oil pump jacks. Raqqa has been under ISIL control since 2014 and has committed extensive atrocities against civilians. The city is known as the headquarters of the Islamic State. The city previously had a population of approximately 22,000.
