Escalation of violence in the city of Aleppo has killed at least 60 people in 3 days of fighting.

Syria’s northern city of Aleppo has had three days of intense fighting since Friday. A series of air strikes by the government, and shelling attacks by insurgents have killed at least 60 people, including seven children and 10 women, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Fighting has intensified in Syria over the past weeks. On Friday, government air strikes targeted insurgent controlled zones in Aleppo, which killed 45 people according to the Observatory. Insurgents attacked the area controlled by the government in Aleppo, killing another 15 people with home-made rockets and gas canisters as shells.

Syria’s foreign ministry sent a letter to UN Security Council protesting the violence as terrorist attacks on populated areas in Aleppo and Damascus. The letter went on to say that the shellings used in the attacks violated the cessation of hostilities agreement, which took effect in Western Syria in February.

Last week, the main opposition, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC), walked out of formal talks in Geneva due to the regime’s air strikes that violate the cessation of hostilities agreement. The United Nations is looking to continue negotiations and obtain a ceasefire.
