On Monday 5 September 2016, three bombings occurred killing 24 people and wounding over 90 more civilians.

The first two bombings hit an area near the Defense Ministry in Kabul while the third blast, occurring just hours after, detonated near a guest house, located in Share Naw neighborhood, hosting foreigners and diplomats. Subsequently after the third blast, it was reported that two assailants entered the building and opened gunfire. The first bombing was detonated by a trigger, the second successively struck as security forces and civilians ran to help those injured by the first blast, and the third was triggered by a suicide car bomber. Moreover, the Taliban has claimed responsibility for all three attacks in Kabul.

Some of the lives lost during the attack include an army general, two senior security officials, and numerous civilians and policeman. Approximately 42 people, ten foreigners included, were rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment. The bombings took place just one week after an assault on an American university in Kabul where over 13 casualties were announced. The blasts in Kabul is considered to be one of the deadliest incidents to happen in Kabul since there were over 90 fatalities reported from the bombings.

There have been many acts of violence that have consistently targeted Afghanistan. As a result, President Ashraf Ghani has stated that, “The enemies of Afghanistan are losing the fight in the ground battle with security forces”. The insurgents have openly threatened to take over Kunduz and Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmland. Thus, government officials and foreign partners concerned with Afghan’s ability to defend themselves against the Taliban have been preparing to pledge support during the upcoming Brussels conference.
