During a seizure of 3 buses in Afghanistan by Taliban insurgents, at least 9 passengers were killed and more than a dozen were kidnapped.

On Tuesday, 31 May 2016, 3 buses were seized on a road in northern Afghanistan. During the incident, at least 9 passengers were killed and more than a dozen passengers were kidnapped. Several news sources surmised that some of the victims in the killing and kidnapping might have been security forces or government employees.

Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for the attack. The Taliban armed group consists of Sunni Muslims who are against the Western-backed Afghan government and have long been involved in armed conflicts with Afghan government security forces that have inflicted detrimental consequences for civilians, including seizure of vehicles followed by killing and kidnapping of passengers.

Afghan security forces managed to rescue the remaining passengers in the buses. Additionally, Ashraf Ghani, president of Afghanistan, and some other government officials have condemned the incident and vowed to take actions against Taliban insurgents.
