United Nations (UN) strongly condemns a targeting attack against the official convoy of Amrullah Saleh, Afghanistan’s Vice President

On September 9, a failed attack against Amrullah Saleh, Afghanistan’s Vice President, left dozens of civilian casualties. As a result, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Deborah Lyons, extended condolences to the families of the victims. Lyons also wished Saleh and those injured a speedy recovery.

In addition to the official statement, Deborah Lyons expressed “shock” at the initial high number of civilian casualties and assured perpetrators must face justice.

The latest attack has occured  while Afghanistan is preparing direct peace negotiations between the Government and Taliban. Ms Lyons, who is also the head of the UN Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), described the intra-Afghan talks as a historic moment to end the brutal conflict in the country.
