Turkish security forces were accused of shooting and killing as many as 11 Syrian refugees at the border between Turkey and northwestern Syria.

On Sunday, 19 June 2016, Turkish security forces were accused of shooting and killing as many as 11 Syrian refugees at the border between Turkey and northwestern Syria. The victims were men, women, and children, identified as refugees who were trying to flee Syria and enter into Turkey.

Turkish security forces denied allegations of its involvement in the incident. According to some news sources, a Turkish military source said that Turkish security forces did fire warning shots when some people tried to cross the border into Turkey, but nobody aimed directly at them.

Many humanitarian groups and activists have criticized Turkey for its alleged harsh treatments of Syrian refugees, not only in this specific incident but also in general. They have expressed concerns about the growing number of conflicts between Turkish people and Syrian refugees since European Union (EU) pressured Turkey to curb migration flow towards Europe.
