Children are once again paying the consequences of war in Yemen, with a death toll of three children in the last three days

With two separate attacks carried out over the weekend, 11 children were reportedly killed in Yemen. Unfortunately, the number is expected to increase, as verification is still ongoing. The first attack took place in the village of Ad Durayhimi in Al Hudaydah governorate, just south of the strategic port city of Hodeida, which handles about 70 % of all imports to Yemen. The second shelling took place in the neighbourhood of Usayfara on 30 November, in the large government-controlled province of Tai’z, in the south-west.

The statement made by Philippe Duamelle, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Representative to Yemen, also reports a one-month-old baby being among those killed. Three other children have reportedly been injured. As reminded by the Representative, children should always be protected and their killing is horrifying.

On behalf of UNICEF, Mr Duamelle calls “on all parties to the conflict to take all feasible measures to spare children and keep them out of harm’s way”. International Humanitarian Law must not be violated, continues the Representative, and attacks on civilians including children and attacks on densely populated areas are strictly prohibited.
