Bomb attack on Tunisia’s presidential guard bus killed 12 and injured 16.

A suicide bomber targeted a presidential guard bus in Tunis. The explosives detonated as the attacker entered the bus. The blasts killed 12 guards and injured 16 others. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.

Tunisian President Béji Caïd Essebsi declared a 30-day nationwide state of emergency. The Tunisian government also granted the executive and armed forces increased authority, imposed a 9 pm  curfew, and closed its border with Libya to protect itself from further terrorist attacks.

ISIS claimed responsibility for two deadly attacks that struck Tunisia earlier this year. Both attacks targeted tourists: the first killed 22 people in the Bardo museum in March, and the second killed 38 people at a luxury beach hotel last June. Following the 2011 “Jasmine revolution”, in 2014 Tunisia adopted a new constitution that established a democratic government and implemented free elections. However, in the early chaotic days after its revolution, ultraconservative Islamists gained ground, recruiting among young Tunisians and taking over mosques. Reports estimate that more than 3,000 Tunisians are currently fighting for ISIS and other militant groups in surrounding countries.
