One person killed and three injured during a gunfire attack on a Shiite mosque, ISIS claims responsibility.

On Thursday November 26th, three gunmen attacked Imam Khomeini mosque in Bangladesh’s northern city Bogra, about 20 miles north of capital Dhaka. Police report one person being killed, the muezzin of the mosque, and three others injured. The attack happened during early evening prayers when 20-30 worshippers had gathered. No arrests have been made but two Sunni locals were interrogated.

This was the second attack on Bangladesh’s Shia Muslims in a month. In October, explosions detonated at a Shiite shrine in Dhaka, which killed two people and wounded dozens. The day before the attack in Bogra, police shot dead the militant accused of throwing the grenades at the Shiite shrine.

Though ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, the government is dismissing their claim and named Bangladesh’s home based militant group, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen. ISIS has claimed responsibility for several attack in Bangladesh, including a shooting of an Italian priest and the killing of a Sufi Muslim shrine chief, both of which happened earlier in November. Critics of Bangladesh’s government say that the government is pinning the attack on the Jamaat-ul-Muljahideen group to create fear opposing its political rivals.Amid the rising violence in Bangladesh, Australia has advised families of Australian staff in Bangladesh to return on a voluntary basis and announced the withdrawal of  government-funded volunteers by December 31st.
