In a religious private school in Cagliari, Sardinia, two refugee children were recently required to use separate bathrooms from those of their Italian schoolmates.

The children, 9 and 11 years-old respectively, arrived alone in Italy from Egypt and Ethiopia  and without their parents. Currently they are living in foster care close to the school they attend, the Catholic Nostra Signora della Mercede of Cagliari.

An option that caused controversy between the parents of the children attending the school. Nuns determined separate bathrooms might be a solution following many protests from parents claiming to be worried about the risk of disease. However, this segregation was not enough to appease parents’ discontent. Apparently two families pulled their children out of` school after realising the two migrant children had been enrolled. At this point, the sisters addressed the lawyers representing the minors, Marina Bardanzellu and Maria Antonella Taccori, who then explained to the parents during a general assembly that there is no risk to their children, since both migrant children had undergone rigorous clinical checks and have been registered with ASL (local health authority) certificates.

At this time there are no more separate bathrooms - though the judge supervising their guardianship may intervene: the two children are suffering consequences from being rejected by their schoolmates, possibly egged on by their parents. This account represents a serious issue of discrimination against two orphans who landed on the Italian coast after risking their lives crossing the Mediterranean Sea in search of, what they assumed would be a better life.
