Last Saturday, June 6, military leaders of the two most influential Asian countries, India and China, met to ease tensions on the 3,500km (2,174-mile) shared border of the Ladakh region. Both countries have ensured to continue the military and diplomatic engagements in order to peacefully find a compromise.
This area has been subject to several controversies over history since the violent border war in 1962, which ended without a real resolution. The last time this issue reached a high level of tension was in 2017 over the Doklam plateau. The divergence concerned the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the border area under the jurisdiction of both China and India. Last month, the first signs of hostility threatened a future escalation in the same area, however, none of the two countries have denounced offensives nor casualties.
According to the statement from India’s Foreign Ministry, the last meeting took place in a positive atmosphere and could be a great contribution to honour the 70th anniversary of the first establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China. Both countries engaged to ensure peace and tranquillity in the border area.
