The deadly suicide car bomb attack in the eastern Afghanistan city of Khost City occurred on the first day of Ramadan.

On Saturday, 27 May 2017, the suicide bomb, for which responsibility was claimed by the Taliban, was detonated near a stadium and a bus station. The bomber was attacking Afghan police, who were providing security to US forces in eastern Afghanistan. The attack left at least 18 people dead and 10 injured. Two of the injured include children.

The Saturday of the attack was a public holiday in Afghanistan, as it marked the first day of Ramadan. Mubariz Zadran, spokesman for the governor of the Khost province, stated, “The target of the attack was Afghan police and US forces, but most of the victims were civilians”. After the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan called for a ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, the Taliban announced the Friday before the incident that they would intensify their attacks.

On that same Friday, 10 civilians were killed and six were wounded when a minibus hit a roadside bomb in Afghanistan’s western Herat province. The Western-backed Afghan government continues to battle both Taliban and ISIS militants around the country.
