At least 14 are killed and dozens injured after two bombs exploded at a court in northwest Pakistan

On the 2nd of September 2016, two bombs exploded at a district court in Mardan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens of other. In the latest assault on the legal community, a suicide bomber threw a hand grenade at guards and stormed his way into the court compound before detonating his vest containing up to 8 kilos of explosives according to officials, among the morning crowd. Jamaat-ur-Ahrar has claimed responsibility for that attack.

The dead included lawyers and police officers. The president of the Mardan Bar Association, Amir Hussain, stated that lawyers were being targeted for being part of the democratic process  opposed to by attackers, and affirmed that their morale was not ‘dented’ by the attack. This attack comes three weeks after a huge suicide blast killed scores of lawyers in the southwestern city of Quetta, in Balochistan. Pakistan’s legal community have been subject to targeted attacks by militants, who have also targeted religious minorities and schools.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned Friday's attacks, adding that the latest attack would “not shatter our unflinching resolve in our war against terrorism” and added that the terrorists were "showing (their) frustration by attacking soft targets. They shall not get space to hide in Pakistan."
