Since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict on February 24, the International Committee of the Red Cross has been engaged in humanitarian activities aimed to support the most affected people.
In recent weeks, more than 700 operators working in the country have visited prisoners of war detained by Ukraine and Russia, checking their health conditions and that the treatments received inside the prison facilities were respectful of human rights. Furthermore, where they were missing, the operators have procured basic necessities, blankets, hygiene products, clothes, books.
During her four-day visit to Ukrainian territory, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric met prisoners of war, Ukrainian authorities, and members of the civilian community.
In her travels to Odessa, Mykolaiv, Kherson and Kiev, the President was able to witness firsthand the "devastating humanitarian situation" in the Ukrainian country after almost a year since the beginning of the conflict. The winter that has just begun, the rapidly dropping temperatures and the continuous Russian bombing of power plants - which have caused electricity to be cut off in various regions of the country - have contributed to worsening the health conditions of the Ukrainian community.
The humanitarian assistance by the ICRC - through the delivery of basic necessities to the displaced, medical supplies to hospitals and psychological support to the affected communities - is aimed at alleviating this "devastating humanitarian situation" which is affecting the lives of millions of people.
