Fighting between the Iraqi army military offensive and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) displaced more than 30,000 residents of Fallujah between June 15 and June 18 2016.  More than 85,000 people have been displaced since May 23, 2016, and more than 3.4 million Iraqis have been displaced since January 2014.

The extremely high number of people fleeing Fallujah in recent days has overwhelmed camps and pushed the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) funding into crisis levels.  Six camps have been set up in Amiriyat and Fallujah, three others are being built in Khalidya and Habbaniya Tourist City, while UNHCR expects 20 more will be required in the coming weeks.

The UNCHR said that $17.5 million is urgently needed for the tens of thousands of civilians fleeing Fallujah in recent days. “The funds are desperately needed to expand the number of camps and to provide urgently needed relief supplies for displaced people who have already endured months of deprivation and hardship without enough food or medicine,” said Ariane Rummery, UNHCR Spokesperson.
