A four-month unilateral ceasefire between Sudanese government and rebels seeks to address humanitarian issues against civilian populations.

On Friday, June 17, Sudanese rebel groups and the Sudanese government announced a unilateral four-month ceasefire, the third of its kind in less than a year. The ceasefire is held to resume peace negotiations in Addis Ababa on the Blue Nile and South Kordofan.  Both Sudanese states have endured rebel attacks on their large ethnic minority populations since South Sudan broke away in 2011.

“The priority objectives should address the humanitarian issues in the Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur, to stop aerial bombardment against civilian populations [and] the release of all prisoners of war,” said the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) Secretary General Yasir Arman in a statement on Saturday.

The Sudanese government and rebels have held 11 rounds of peace talks to resolve the conflict, but none have resulted in a deal.  Both sides suffered casualties since the end of the previous ceasefire earlier this year.
