On March 12, the Islamic State launched two chemical attacks on the city of Taza, just south of the Iraqi city of Kirkuk. The attacks killed a 3-year-old girl and injured 600 others, following a previous attack three days prior that injured 40 people.

Sameer Wais, a member of a Shiite militia fighting the Islamic State in Kirkuk province, is the father of the child killed in the attack on Saturday. He was on duty when Taza was struck by rockets carrying chemical weapons for the second time in three days. Wais ran home and found his child in need of medical attention, and rushed her to the hospital in Kirkuk. They took her home the next day, “but by midnight she started to get worse. Her face puffed up and her eyes bulged. Then she turned black and pieces of her skin started to come off,” he said. The child died the next morning.

Helmi Hamdi, a nurse at the Taza hospital, said that the victims of the attack are suffering from infected burns, suffocation and dehydration. Eight people had to be transferred to Baghdad for further treatment.

The US-led coalition has been targeting the Islamic State’s chemical weapons infrastructure for two months. In a raid last month, US special forces captured the head of the Islamic State unit attempting to develop chemical weapons in northern Iraq.
