On June 21, 2016, a blast at an ammunition plant killed over 20 civilians. Casualties are still rising with over 30 people injured. The plant is located in Garabulli, approximately 50 km from Libya’s capital, Tripoli. The blast occurred when workers entered the building.
The plant had been under the control of an armed group from Misrata, which had been stationed in the city for five years. A dispute broke out between local residents and a member of the armed group. It is believed that, when armed local residents entered the depot, they shot at a barrel of ammunition and fireworks that caused the explosion.
