An attack on rebel-held areas of Aleppo and rockets fired by insurgents on state controlled neighborhoods kills dozens and forces 40,000 civilians to flee.

The attack on April 16, 2016 was the bloodiest since a fragile ceasefire in February had reduced fighting. At least 22 civilians were killed in the city of Aleppo and at least five people dead in the government-controlled western districts. Many more have been wounded and displaced.

The escalation of fighting threatens the truce deal between the government and the rebels reached on February 27th. The deal does not include the fight against the Islamic State (IS) or al-Qaeda’s local Syrian affiliate. Increased activity by IS has forced over 40,000 to flee and at risk of displacement. Many are settling in the eastern suburbs near the town of Azaz on the border with Turkey. Turkey has closed its border except in cases of extreme injuries or illnesses.

Increased hostiles and air strikes are also limiting the capabilities of international aid organizations to access residential areas. This has the potential to worsen the crisis and misery of the Syrian people. As the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) captures camps, the people have nowhere to go and are receiving limited aid.
