Arrested female suicide bomber claims to be one of the schoolgirls kidnapped from Chibok in northeast Nigeria two years ago.

On March 25, two female suicide bombers were arrested in Cameroon before they could detonate their bombs. One of the girls claims to be one of the 219 missing schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram from Chibok in northeast Nigeria two years ago. Officials have delayed the questioning of the alleged kidnapped girl due to injuries, but hope that the arrest will lead them to whereabouts of the missing Chibok girls.

The two girls were stopped and arrested by local self-defence forces in the village of Limani on Friday. “One of them indeed declared that she is one of the Chibok hostages. She is around 15. We are now verifying, because on the Nigerian side they have the names and photos of these girls,” said Cameroonian local government administrator, Raymond Roksdo.

Her identity has raised doubts, and Nigerian officials said that they would send parents from Chibok to help confirm if she was one of the schoolgirls on Monday. Spokesperson for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu said that they were hoping for the girl to be questioned and meet with the parents, but her injuries required medical attention and the investigation was likely to be delayed. “She was found to be heavily drugged and bore several injuries on her body, for which she is receiving treatment,” said Shehu.

As the investigation proceeded, it appeared less likely that the girl was from Chibok. The girl appeared to be no older than 12 years old, and younger than the age of the kidnapped Chibok girls who are 15 years or older. A non-government organization, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation in Nigeria, was working with the Nigerian government to organize a trip for the parents to travel to Cameroon to meet the girl.
