The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported seven people killed, including five civilians and two unidentified persons, as a result of the car-bomb explosion in Azaz, a region controlled by rebels backed by Turkey. In addition, a local hospital in Syria and Turkish state media reported around 85 injured people.
The incident occurred days after Turkish intelligence and Turkish-backed military police arrested some Islamic State members in their areas of control. Besides, on June 26, ISIS took responsibility for the assassination of an official in the real estate offices who was shot in Al-Bab city in north-eastern Aleppo, a city under controlled by Turkish forces and “Euphrates Shield” factions.
Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), a NGO recording casualties from explosive violence around the world, is concerned that when explosive weapons are issued in populated areas, over 90% of the casualties are likely civilians
AOAV reported Syria as the worst country impacted by explosive weapons in 2019 with 7,256 civilian casualties reported in 2019. AOAV has also noted with regret that improvised explosive devices (IEDs) account for 21% (1,548) of the total civilian casualties from explosive violence in Syria in 2019.
Given the urgent need for preventative measures to be implemented by States and the international community, AOAV calls for international collaboration to generate greater awareness of the number of civilians killed and injured by IEDs.
