Suicide bombers target a school and market in north Cameroon that killed 32 people and wounded 86 others.

On Monday, four suicide bombers from the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, attacked the Bodo market in northern Cameroon. Two bombers targeted the centre, while the other two targeted the main entrance and exit points of the market resulting in the deadliest attacks in Cameroon. These attacks were followed by two suicide bombers striking a public school in the town of Kerawa on Thursday.

The attacks on the market killed 32 people and wounded 86. Local sources report that the attacks involved four young girl bombers. The Bodo market is located close to the town’s entrance and was the target of previously attempted attack in late December 2015. That attack involved two female suicide bombers that blew up the town’s entrance after they were stopped from accessing the Bodo market by local vigilante groups in collaboration with the Cameroonian army.  The attack at the school has not reported any deaths, and has yet to release the number of injured people. The school in Kerawa appears to have been housing Nigerian refugees.

Communications Minister Issa Chiroma Bakary reports that, “1098 civilians, 67 of our soldiers and three police officials have been killed in these barbaric attacks by the Boko Haram terrorist group.” Boko Haram has displaced more than 2 million people in Cameroon during its six-year insurgency.

Cameroon, Nigeria, Niger, Benin and Chad have pledged to set up a regional force to wipe out Boko Haram. The United States has sent out troops to assist with intelligence. National armies are mobilized to tackle Boko Haram on their own while they wait for the regional force to be established.
