Three suicide bombings struck a market in Lake Chad killing over 30 civilians and injuring an estimated 80.

On the morning of 5th December, a triple suicide attack targeted a highly populated area in Lake Chad. Attackers detonated three suicide bombs at a public market on Koulfa Island. The explosion injured over 80 civilians and killed at least 30 others.  While no extremist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, Boko Haram is suspected.

The United Nations condemned the attack, expressed its condolences to the victims, and urged affected countries to address the threat of Boko Haram. Although the Republic of Chad lies within the greater part of Lake Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger share borders with the region. The four countries have experienced numerous Boko Haram attacks within the past year.Republic of Chad’s President Idriss Déby Itno has sent 3,000 soldiers to fight against terrorist extremist groups earlier this year. Despite tightened security, the region has continued to endure several terrorist attacks. In November, Boko Haram executed a series of deadly attacks in Lake Chad, which prompted Chad’s national assembly to declare a four-month state of emergency.
