Attacks on Darfur AU-UN Mission Civilian Camps

Peacekeepers from UNAMID Mission Peacekeepers from UNAMID Mission UNAMID

12 June 2018

There were three attacks between May 21st and the 23rd of 2018 on internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the Central Darfur State

Because of the several fatalities and injuries being reported by the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation. these attacks are particularly alarming and breaches of humanitarian law, as the camps are recognized humanitarian spaces.

The African Union/United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) is a joint peacekeeping mission that originated in July 2007 following a violent civil war in 2003 that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The crimes against humanity included rape and murder of the citizens caught in between the deadly conflict of the Sudanese government and militias. Today, the mission is seeking to protect and maintain peace in the region, with IDP camps and other assistance still being offered over a decade since the original launch of the mission. The attack on this particular camp killed four citizens and wounded dozens other.

The conflict between the government and armed groups has become increasingly more violent, with the Central Darfur state holding the most peacekeepers as they still show no signs of a ceasefire. New precautions have been taken within the camps, including more patrols of the areas involved and units to intercept future violence. UNAMID is collaborating with the Sudanese government and the United Nations Security Council to safeguard more civilians.
