Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have entered the 12
th year under the restrictive Israeli-Egyptian blockade.

The Charity Coalition, an organization for Islamic Charity Groups, declared on Thursday 25th  January that, as a direct result of the ongoing siege, around the 80% of the strip’s population now live in poverty. The restrictions imposed by Israel on the movement of the traders and on Gaza imports and exports, contributes considerably to the economic recession. Agriculture and fishing are also two other sectors strongly affected by the embargo. The economic situation Gaza’s inhabitants are experiencing since 2006 is a complex reality. Each year the living, social and humanitarian situation get worse. Gaza’s isolation has ravaged its economy and impoverished many of the two million people who live in the territory, depriving them from many essential commodities.

The report of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, entitled ‘Gaza: 100,000 hours of isolation’, highlights the dramatic consequences of the decennial embargo and wars on the Gaza Strip. "While Israel is only continuing its long history of isolating Gaza, yet at an unprecedented length and severity since 2006, the consequences of the blockade continue to aggravate in unimaginable ways," declared Ramy Abdu, chairman of Euro-Med Monitor, accusing the international community to accept “this isolation with silence and oblivion", whilst over two million people continue to struggle with growing rates of poverty, unemployment and food insecurity and with diminishing quality of basic services, including electricity, water, education and healthcare.

The blockade dictates the day-to-day reality for every resident in Gaza, hostage to external intervention and at the mercy of Israel, the Arabs and the international community.
