By delivering its emergency support, the EU has proven once again its commitment to humanitarian aid in the conflict in, and around, Nagorno Karabakh. The recent €400.000 allocation brings the EU funding to €900.000 since early October, when the hostilities started.
It is important to bear in mind that EU humanitarian aid is tailored on needs, without discrimination, and in light with the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence, which are also the foundation of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). In this spirit, the emergency support will be used by the IFRC, the Red Cross of Armenia and the Red Crescent of Azerbaijan. The priority will be to bring food packages, blankets, hygiene items and other urgently needed supplies to those civilians who were and are forced to flee due to the hostilities.
Commenting on the conflict, Janez Lanercic, the Commissioner for Crisis Management, called for the immediate end of the hostilities that have already claimed civilian lives, adding that the EU is “extremely concerned about the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, given the upcoming cold season and the aggravating COVID-19 pandemic”.
