Afghan National Army Attacks Wardak Village

4 December 2015
The Afghan government issued an attack against a village in the province of Wardak.

On Friday, 4th December, the Afghanistan national army (ANA) targeted a village in the province of Wardak, Afghanistan. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reports that several shells exploded near a mosque in the Shahi Khil neighbourhood. The explosion injured three civilians and killed nine others, including three children. Three soldiers were arrested for the attack the following day.

The UNAMA condemned the attack, calling for proper compensation to the victims, as well as urging the implementation of peace agreements. In response, Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani ordered an investigation and asked the government to support the victims of the attack.

Like in Friday’s attack, Afghan government has primarily adopted an armed response over national policy to eliminate the threat of terror attacks. As a result, shelling by government troops targeting extremists groups, such as the Taliban, have resulted in civilian casualties. The UN has emphasized the government's obligation to create and set forth plans to develop and implement plans to protect highly populated civilian areas.

Despite the formation of the Government of National Unity in 2014, the Taliban continues to declare itself as the ruling entity in the country. It has launched attacks targeting civilian populated areas and consequently caused the displacement of over 7,000 families in the country within the past year. The presence of the Taliban has challenged and threatened the stability of the government.
